Detailed Itinerary – 10 Days Uganda and Rwanda
Day 1: Pick up and transfer by road up to Murchison Falls National Park
Today, you will meet your safari guide in your respective hotel facility where you had a night when you arrived in Uganda the previous day. Expect to get up early such that you prepare yourself, and have a cup of tea or coffee.
After breakfast, ensure that all your luggage is packed in the safari vehicle to be used for today’s road trip. And before setting off, you will have a briefing about your trip.
At around 8:00 am, you will be transferred from Kampala/Entebbe up to Murchison Falls National Park, Uganda’s biggest National Park with geographical/area coverage of 3840 sq. km. Getting to Murchison Falls National Park will take about 6-7 hours via the Kampala-Gulu highway.
En route, expect plenty of things including the freshly harvested pineapples around Luweero. Proceed and you will have a special stopover visit at Ziwa Rhino Sanctuary in Nakasongola District.
At Ziwa, you will participate in a trek to see rhinos in the wild and you will be accompanied by an experienced guide. The excursion involves exploring the unique behaviors of rhinos, and taking pictures while these huge mammals are in their natural habitat.
From Ziwa Rhino Sanctuary, you will be transferred to Masindi for lunch then go to Murchison Falls National Park, crossing via the Kichumbanyobo gate. As you navigate towards the Northern section of Murchison Falls National Park, keep an eye on plentiful species as they freely roam including primates around Kaniyo-Pabidi and Budongo Forest.
Your driver guide will take you up to the top of the falls for a fun-filling experience characterized by observing how the powerful Murchison Falls forcefully squeezes itself into a narrow rock of about 7-8 meters, then breaks down 45m.
After photography and exploration at the top of the falls, you will connect up to your pre-booked accommodation facility for relaxation, dinner, and an overnight stay.
Day 2: Enjoy an exciting game drive and launch/boat cruise with an expert
Early in the morning, you will have breakfast at your respective places of stay and later, board a 4WD safari vehicle ready for your game drive. Today’s game drive includes exploring the diverse game along the Northern section and this comes with sights including African elephants, the Rothschild giraffes, and warthogs. This area is also most popular for abundant antelope families including Uganda Kobs, Oribis, Jackson’s hartebeest; cape buffaloes, lions, leopards, and several bird species.
After the 2-3 game drive round tour, you will have great moments at the lodge including enjoying lunch. In the afternoon, set off for an afternoon launch or boat cruise excursion which may go for 2-3 hours along the Victoria Nile. The launch cruise will connect you to the base of the falls and expect to enjoy the sight of hippos, crocodiles, and aquatic bird species.
Once you reach the base of Murchison Falls, you have ultimate freedom to capture the best pictures then you may proceed with a hike to the top or return by boat.
Day 3: Drive to Kibale National Park in a 4WD safari vehicle
Have a delicious breakfast and after, you will be departing for Kibale National Park, a renowned primate capital of the world. Your journey will cover about 7-8 hours and comes with views of the breathtaking Rift Valley escarpment, homesteads around Hoima, and the stunning tea farms around the Fort Portal area.
On arrival at Fort Portal tourism city, lunch will be provided and you will also use this period to stretch a little. Do not leave without enjoying the mesmerizing view of the legendary Rwenzori Mountain ranges in the distance.
As you connect to Kibale National Park, get a remarkable treat to scenic Crater Lakes and tea farms. On arrival, you will check in your respective lodges for relaxation, dinner, and overnight.
Day 4: Chimpanzee tracking & road trip transfer up to Queen Elizabeth National Park
Enjoy a hefty breakfast in your respective lodges, you will head to the Kanyanchu Visitor Center where you clear with the Kibale National Park reception team. Once you have been verified, you will join others for briefing in the briefing room. The park tourism warden will take you on guidelines for chimpanzee tracking, and also allocate groups of visitors to the park guides.
You will leave Kanyanchu for an actual trek at around 8:00 am and expect to spend 2-4 hours in the jungles. As you walk, keep eyes on numerous species within Kibale Forest including colobus monkeys, vervet monkeys, olive baboons, and birds.
On getting chimpanzee community, you have an hour guaranteed for a face-to-face encounter, photography, and observing the unique body gestures of the chimpanzees.
After the chimp interaction, walk back or be driven to the lodge from the point where you will be dropped to start your trek. From the lodge, you will have lunch and some refreshments, then check out.
From Kibale, head off to your next destination which is Queen Elizabeth National Park where you will have a relaxed stay in the pre-booked accommodation.
Day 5: Experience the best of game drive and launch cruise
Following an early morning breakfast, you will catch up with a guided game drive along Kasenyi Plains. This 2-3 hour guided game viewing session includes a search for diversity of wildlife. This sector is famous for great sights for spotted hyenas, lions, leopards, African elephants, cape buffaloes, Uganda kobs, birds like Kori bustards, and others.
After the game drive, you will have a great time in the lodge enjoying lunch. In the afternoon, you will participate in a launch or boat cruise on the Kazinga channel. This is a natural channel and extends 32 km connecting Lake Edward and Lake George. You will spend 2-3 hours on a launch cruise and expect to encounter hippos, crocodiles, and aquatic birds in large numbers. After the launch cruise, you will get back to chill at the lodge.
Day 6: Pick up and drive up to Bwindi Impenetrable National Park, en-route search for tree-climbing lions at Ishasha.
At leisure, enjoy your lodge, and after, you will set off for Bwindi Impenetrable National Park. Getting to Bwindi will involve you driving via Ishasha, the sector in Queen Elizabeth National Park known for tree-climbing lions, topis, and other mammals. After a short game drive and a picnic lunch, continue to Bwindi to check in at your lodge.
Day 7: Experience the most of mountain gorilla trekking and Batwa cultural encounter
Have breakfast in the morning and after, leave the accommodation for briefing. Ensure that you are equipped with the required gear and enough bottled drinking water. The briefing session will involve getting insight into gorilla trekking rules, allocation of park guides, and habituated gorilla groups.
Later, you will proceed with an actual search for a family of mountain gorillas in the wild and expect to spend 2-8 hours. This covers an hour of up-close encounter with a family of mountain gorillas in their natural habitat.
Day 8: Pick up in the morning & drive off to Volcanoes National Park Ruhengeri
Enjoy an early morning breakfast and after, you will leave Bwindi for Volcanoes National Park in Rwanda. This includes crossing the Katuna/Chanika border. On arrival at Volcanoes National Park in Northwestern Rwanda, you will have a great moment in your respective accommodation options.
Day 9: Enjoy a thrilling gorilla trek in Rwanda, visit the Iby’Iwacu cultural village
Today, you will get briefed about gorilla trekking regulations and later, the park official will allocate you a gorilla group to explore. Each group of mountain gorillas will be visited by a group of 8 guests. On a gorilla trek, you will spend at least 2-6 hours in the jungles in search of a family of the rare mountain gorillas. The long adventure includes an hour for up close and personal encounters with a group of these large apes.
After the close interaction with mountain gorillas in Volcanoes National Park, expect to return to the lodge. Have a great time in the lodge and later, you will pay a visit to Iby’Iwacu village to explore more about the distinct traditions and cultural practices of the Rwandese.
Day 10: Depart from Volcanoes National Park to Kigali, engage in the city tour
Check out of your safari lodge and start your journey to Kigali. On arrival, proceed with a city excursion which includes paying a visit to the Kigali/Gisozi genocide site plus other historical sites. After exploring Kigali, have lunch and then catch up with your flight back.
