Gorillas that are trekked are already habituated and got used to humans. This is not the same case with the habituation experience since these gorillas are less used to humans. They are just teaching them to be comfortable with people.
A traveler spends 4 hours with the gorillas during habituation. Just like trekking, a visitor is supposed to have a permit from UWA or trusted tour operator and this is supposed to be done in advance like 2 month or 3 month.
What is the Gorilla Habituation process?
The gorilla process takes a significant period of time. The process of habituating a family of mountain gorillas takes at least 2 to 3 years. Chimpanzees may even take up to 7 years.
The ultimate goal can be achieved through constant visit to the habitat where these primates live, and this is done by researchers and assistants. They spend good time in their presence each day observing how they behave and gradually, they get used to human presence.
