Mountain gorillas

Bwindi Impenetrable NP is an important home to over 459 mountain gorillas. This park is a preferred gorilla trekking destination and holds already habituated gorilla groups –these are available for gorilla tourism.

The massive mountain gorillas survive within the 4 sectors of Bwindi including Buhoma, Ruhija, Nkuringo and Rushaga.

Mountain gorillas are large in size and these apes weigh from 250kg. When standing, they can reach the height of 4 to 5 feet.

How many gorilla groups to trek in Bwindi

A total of about 21 habituated gorilla groups live in the various sectors of Bwindi. They are open to gorilla trekking and include among others Oruzogo, Habinyanja, Kyaguriro, Nkuringo, Rushegura, Bitukura, Kahungye, Bikingi, Nshongi, Mukiza,

Mucunguzi, Mishaya, Bushaho, Busingye, Christmas, Mishaya, Posho, Tindatine, Rwigi, Kutu, Muyambi and Bunyindo.

Gorilla permit cost

To be allowed to go and enjoy incredible moment in the presence of gorillas in the wild, a trekker must have a valid gorilla permit. The current gorilla permits are issued at the cost of USD 800 per person and they can be secured via a reliable tour operator in Uganda.

Bwindi protects up to 14 snake species and 9 of them are endemic to this protected area. These share the same habitat with 14 lizards, 6 various chameleon species and more.

Over 27 amphibian species range within this park accounting for 11 endemic species to the Albertine rift valley region, 6 species that are of significant Global Conservation interest that is the Kivu reed frogs, Ahl’s reed frogs, plus African leaf folding frogs. These unique species can be spotted at ease while on a guided forest walks.

This park experiences the dry season from June to September and December till February –the perfect months of the year when there is scarcity of rainfall. By air, take the shortest time of about 2 hours on a flight from Entebbe Airport to Kihihi or Kisoro airstrip then reach the park by 4×4 drive vehicle.
